Pita Bread!

My boyfriend is taking a speech class and is doing a speech on how to make pita bread so I decided to upload the recipe here as well!

We used the recipe from http://mideastfood.about.com/od/breadsrice/r/pitabreadrecipe.htm but I'm a visual person so i'll be posting pictures as well! :)

Ingredients

- 3 Cups of flour
- 1 1/4 teaspoon of salt
- 1 package of yeast
- 1/2 cup of warm water
- 1 teaspoon of granulated sugar
- 1 cup of lukewarm water
- olive oil

1) You want to first mix the packet of yeast with 1/2 cup of warm water. Then add the 1 teaspoon of granulated sugar (we used brown here) and stir. Then let sit for 10-15 min until water it frothy. It should look like this when done!

2) While waiting for the yeast, mix 3 cups of flour and the 1 1/4 teaspoon of salt. Make a hole in the flour to add the yeast mixture in.

3)  When the yeast mixture is done, add it in as well as the 1 cup of warm water. Mix slowly and thoroughly and it should be sticky and elastic.

4) Flour your board and knead the dough for 10-15 minutes until it is smooth and not sticky.

5) Oil a bowl (preferably with a lid) with some olive oil and drop the dough in. Flip it over and take the dough out and put the non-oiled side into the bowl so it is oiled thoroughly. Now let it sit for 3 hours or until it has double in size.

sorry for the blurry picture but we wrapped our bowl in a small towel because the weather here is in the high 90's so we have the a/c on.

6) Now you want to preheat the oven to 500 degrees and start rolling out the dough into little balls. This should make around 12 balls. You want to let it sit for 10 min while the oven is preheating. You also want to heat up the pan you will be using to cook the pita bread on so pop that in the oven as well.

7) We don't have a rolling pin so we just squashed the balls with our hands to make round circles. They shouldn't be so thick. It should be around 1/4 of an inch thick

8) With your heated pan, place the pita bread on it and cook for 4 min and then flip it and cook again for 2 min. You then want to push down with a spatula to squeeze out any air in the middle.
Then eat with hummus and enjoy! I love tomatoes and we had some leftover from the other day when we made hummus!
